One of my students, who is severely autistic and nonverbal, was rocking in his chair the other day and accidentally smashed my foot. Since I know he can say something vaguely similar to “Sorry” I told him to say it. He kept saying something that wasn’t even close. “Say you’re sorry!” I demanded. “Say it. I know you can say it!” And that wonderful little stinker did the most appropriately smart alecky thing for a 4th grade boy… he grabbed his iPad and selected the word “it”. And then he laughed.
Love that boy!
Learning to be cheeky!
