I have three beautifully unique children: a son, Noah, who is 19 and twin daughters, Gabby & Alex who are 17. We are a family challenged by autism. Both my son Noah and my daughter Alex have autism. Our journey began 15 years ago when my husband and I first heard the word “autism” applied to our daughter; a year later we would hear that word again – applied to our son. DEVASTATING news! What followed were years of research , seminars, workshops, support groups, doctors’ appointments and therapy sessions – and through this journey I have learned a great deal about the disorder, about my children, about my community and about myself . I went from despair – and the feeling of being cheated out of the life I had planned – to desperately seeking knowledge to equip myself with the tools necessary to be the best advocate and mother to my children. It has been a long process of one step forward then two steps back; however, as a family, we keep taking those forward steps: one after the other, each marching to the beat of our own drum and finding inner peace with our new reality.
