My son, John, was diagnosed with Autism at age 2 1/2 years old. They told us he was severely Autistic. We were sad and scared for his future.
John was non verbal until about 4 years old, then he started repeating phrases from Disney movies. We call it video talk. He has memorized every date and character from each movie. He also draws all of the characters.
He is now going on 22 years of age and is not severely Autistic, I’d say high functioning. Will he ever live on his own? Probably not. But he has dreams, he loves being around people, and would some day like to work as a Disney Animator.
The Autism Center at Hospital for Special Care (HSC) is an integrated resource providing diagnostic, assessment, therapy services and comprehensive guidance to caregivers, educators and family members across the region.
