My name is Shamarr Baldwin. I’m a case worker for the state of Connecticut and a small time documentary maker. I just completed a film about a 75-year-old woman who is raising her 37-year-old autistic son. The object of this documentary is to reveal not only her struggles to raise her son, but to go against what at the time was considered unacceptable to keep a child that had either physical or development issues. At that time society thought children such as these would be “better off” being farmed out to state run facilities so as to take the “burden” off their families. I would like to share this short documentary with you in order to raise awareness of the difficulties that do exist when one is not only trying to raise an autistic individual but also going against what at the time was considered the “norm.”
